March 25 & 26: Workshop and General Meeting with Guest Artist David DeGroot
For nearly 25 years, David DeGroot curated one of the most diverse, well-maintained and inspiring public bonsai collections as the former curator of the Weyerhaeuser Company’s “Pacific Rim Collection” (now the Pacific Bonsai Museum). DeGroot started practicing bonsai in 1972, and has studied under several Japanese bonsai artists. His educational journal articles have been published throughout the U.S. and eight other countries, and he has published two books, widely regarded as seminal books in any bonsai artist's collection - “Basic Bonsai Design” and “Principles of Bonsai Design. He travels widely to lecture, and has presented in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, China, England, South Africa and Venezuela. His diverse knowledge of Asian and native species of trees and their varying natural forms is a product of his long tenure as curator, and he continues to innovate and transform the art of American Bonsai.
Dave DeGroot, will conduct a workshop for a maximum of eight participants on Sunday March 25 at Bonsai Northwest in Tukwila. The workshop will run from 11:30am-3:30pm. The cost is $55. Participants are expected to bring a mature, vigorous tree with good potential (bring a second tree in case there is only minimal work to be done on your first choice), bonsai tools and wire. Bonsai Northwest has a wide selection of trees available if you wish to purchase one for the workshop. Silent observers are welcome at a cost of $10. This is a great opportunity for those new (or not so new) to bonsai to pay a small price to learn by observing. If you elect to participate, please be on time so the workshop is not disrupted. If you are interested in participating, please contact our workshop coordinator, Lynn Paietta via the PSBA website (/workshops/). Payment by credit card is available, just ask Lynn.
