Monday, February 27th, 2023 - General Meeting with Guest Artist Dennis Vojtilla
Dennis Vojtilla will be the PSBA Guest artist for the February 27th 2023 General meeting. A three time U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition winner for Best Deciduous tree, Dennis has been cultivating bonsai for more than 40 years.
Dennis has competed in multitude of U.S. shows and in 2016, Dennis' European White Birch won the Finest Deciduous Bonsai award at the 5th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition. In 2018 his Japanese maple was awarded Finest Deciduous Bonsai at the 6th US National Bonsai Exhibition. In 2021 his Washington Hawthorn won best Deciduous Bonsai at the 7th annual U.S. National Exhibition, this clearly speaks to his unmatched deciduous tree work.
In recognition of his contribution as a teacher, artist and member of the “Bonsai Society of Portland” Dennis was awarded the club’s honorary membership for Life in April 2022.
His interest in deciduous trees was inspired by the great eastern hardwood forests and parks of his youth in Western Pennsylvania. This perspective is reflected in his naturalistic style of Bonsai with lots of twigs and fine branching. Living outside of Portland Oregon, Dennis has come to appreciate the “Western style” of Bonsai that has evolved in the region. Having grown a wide variety of trees, Dennis now concentrates on deciduous species and is particularly fond of flowering and fruiting species.
His latest endeavor is creating and high-quality Pinot Noir bonsai from vines growing in his vineyard.
In this first visit to the Puget Sound Bonsai Association Dennis will focus his program on the steps to “Finishing” deciduous Bonsai, you won’t want to miss it.
Workshop spots are available with Dennis Vojtilla on Sunday February 26th 12:00 - 4:00 PM and Monday February 27th from 9th 12:00 - 4:00 PM. Contact Lynn about the workshops.
